A Christmas tree topper is a decoration placed on the very top of the Christmas tree. The most popular tree toppers are an angel or a star.
Choosing a Christmas tree topper is important as it is the ‘pièce de résistance.’ That is, it is the most important feature of the tree. Do most of us choose a tree topper without much thought of its significance? My choice of Christmas tree topper in an angel. A few years ago, I updated our Christmas tree topper replacing it with the smaller, but much-loved decoration, with an angel that looked more radiant, with shining golden wings and a harp!
When I placed the angel on the top of our tree this year I mused on the role of angels in our lives. Do angels exist and do I have an angel to watch over me? I went to my bookcase to look for the book titled ‘An Angel to Watch Over Me’ by Joan Wester Anderson. It is a collection of true stories of children’s encounters with angels. I then found out that Joan Anderson has written other books about angels including ‘In the Arms of Angels’ a collection of true stories about angels as our heavenly guardians. With the world the way it is today we could all do with a guardian angel. A spiritual being to guide us, protect and comfort us. But are angels just make believe or are the stories about angels real?
There is one story in the Bible that tells us about a group of shepherds watching over their sheep. Suddenly an angel stood in their midst and light shone all around. When this happened, the shepherds were terrified. The angel told them not to be afraid saying I’m here to tell you about a great and joyful event that is meant for everybody across the world. The word angel is derived from the Greek word angelos meaning messenger. The message to the shepherds was that a Saviour (the Messiah, the Lord) had been born in Bethlehem. The angel told them to look for a baby wrapped in a blanket and lying in a manger. The shepherds talked it over and decided to go to Bethlehem to find out if what the angel said was true. They were so excited they left their sheep and ran towards the town where they found Mary, Joseph and the baby lying in the manger. Seeing was believing! They told everyone they met what the angel had said about this infant. All who heard the shepherds were impressed. I would be impressed too if a neighbour told me they had seen an angel. I would want to know all about it.
However, for now, all I hope is that I have an angel watching over me. If we all have a guardian angel than the angel brigade is very busy at the moment. With the drought, heatwaves, bush fires and other tragedies experienced by many Australians in recent months much comfort is needed.
I was very saddened hearing about the two volunteer rural fire fighters who lost their lives last night in New South Wales. It is difficult to make sense of such a tragedy. Their family and friends will need considerable comfort for many days to come. It is times like this when an angel takes the form of a person. A person from the community who will step in and step up and provide support and comfort to guide others through their grief.
Yes, an angel is not always a spiritual being – but a human being, just like you, just like me!
I wish all my readers many joyful events as we pass from 2019 to 2020. Have a happy, safe and wonderful holiday season.
