COVID CUDDLY

I have seen a few COVID CUDDLY people. These people were not always COVID CUDDLY, but this year 2020, things changed. We have all been managing the Coronavirus, COVID-19 and some of us have joined the COVID CUDDLY army.

Once I realised I had joined the COVID CUDDLY army I thought I have to do something about it. All my ‘good intentions’ of exercising at home, when it was not safe to go outdoors, disappeared – just like a puff of smoke!

One of the best ways to lose the COVID CUDDLY kilos is to cut out carbohydrates. Things like bread, pasta and potatoes. I am a big fan of eating breakfast and that includes toast. Eating breakfast gives us energy for the day and will help us with better weight management. But wait! That is only if we then exercise enough during the day to burn up the calories.

Potatoes, although a carbohydrate, are an excellent source of vitamins and minerals. I was bought up on a meat and three vegetable diet. As were my parents and grandparents. So why is it different today? These days we move less, eat more and drink more.

Living in a developed country such as Australia we have the ‘good life’ available to us all year around. In generations past, birthday, Christmas, and other special events were an occasion for food that was not eaten regularly. But now, every grocery shopping day, we can make into a special event. We can buy food grown locally and overseas. We can buy food whether it is in season or out of season. The seasons have merged into one and our expectations have grown with the change.

A healthy diet includes plenty of fruit and vegetables. Nutritionists recommend 3-4 servings of fish a week. Two of these should be oily fish.

I love to cook, to try new recipes, including pasta dishes. With this comes the possibility of a sneaky kilo, when I was not looking! And yes, I did look recently and I saw them, the COVID CUDDLY army, lots of them had attached themselves to my body.

It is now time to do the right thing and get back into my exercise regime. I find the best way for me is to exercise early in the day, before breakfast. I read that this will burn more fat, so this works well for me.

There is nothing wrong with being a little COVID CUDDLY. But if we are too overweight it can cause health problems, such as high blood pressure and high cholesterol.

It is much easier to put on a few kilos than it is to get rid of them. I have never been a fan of fad diets. Eating well and exercising is a healthier way to live and control our weight. Then comes the ‘but’ word … but it is much easier to know what to do, then to do it.

I am considering the CSIRO Total Wellbeing Diet. I do not want a diet but a lifestyle that will sustain my weight over the years. Therefore, I signed up for the 3-Day Taster Menu Plan. By Christmas I may be less COVID CUDDLY for Santa, but still happy for a cuddle.
