In bed with Andrea
Yes, I am spending more and more time in bed with Andrea. My One&Only (O&O) knows what is happening and he is okay with it all. I enjoy a relaxed night in bed when I have Andrea singing me to sleep. I know what you are thinking – what is going on with Kathryn and her O&O? From time to time I lay awake at night, thinking about anything and everything! People I’ve met, places I’ve been, things I’ve done or haven’t done! However, once Andrea starts singing I soon drift off to sleep.
It all started back in 1999 when I travelled to Cairns for work. Back and forth each week for four weeks. However, my work was not in Cairns but Atherton around one and a half hours drive each way. To keep me company Andrea travelled with me.
But as you probably guessed it is not the real Andrea. I am listening to Andrea Bocelli singing on my ipod! I bought Andrea Bocelli’s CD Romanza in the late 1990’s and I have enjoyed this and his other music since then.
A little about Andrea. He was born in Tuscany, Italy. Visually impaired from birth with congenital glaucoma, later losing his sight at aged 12 years old due to a soccer injury. However, this disability did not hold him back. Andrea gained a law degree from Pisa University. Then in the late 1980’s he started singing and playing the piano in local bars. Now today, he is the most popular living tenor in the world today. A rare talent indeed!
Whether you sleep with a partner or on your own – a good night’s sleep is essential for our well-being. If music or listening to a podcast helps during a time of sleeplessness this is a good thing. I have always tried to get 8 hours sleep a night, the recommended number of hours. When I was younger and working (paid employment) I had a regular bed-time routine. Now that I am older and out of paid employment (generally referred to as retirement), I can be more flexible with my sleeping routine.
Whatever, we all need a good night’s sleep. Sleep deprivation can cause all sorts of problems from falling asleep at the wheel of a car or injuries at work. Therefore, getting a good night’s sleep is good for our health?
These are my top tips for getting a good night’s sleep which I aim to follow:
- Go to bed and get up at the same time each day. I find this more difficult in the winter months when I hibernate!
- Avoid napping during the day. Occasionally I will have a nap on a Sunday when the fire is on – the warmth of the fire is so seductive and before I know it I am asleep in my recliner chair!
- Exercise daily. A walk is one of the best forms of exercise…I am doing my best with this one!
- Power down. Remove the digital clocks, mobiles,and television from the bedroom. Like us, if you must have a digital clock find something to place in front of it to block the light.
- Avoid stimulants. That includes caffeine, nicotine and alcohol. I rarely drink coffee and don’t smoke but yes, I enjoy a wine with dinner. The key is not to overdo the alcohol unless there is a special celebration then imbibing a few extra wine’s is in order!
- Have a comfortable bed with the pillow best for your sleeping style. That may mean trying out a few pillows to find the right one. Mattresses should be replaced around every 10 years; pillows every 1-2 years depending on the type of filling. Also, a few drops of lavender oil on a tissue and tucked under your pillow will help induce a deep slumber.
- Avoid sleeping pills. Sleeping pills are addictive and interfere with the sleeping cycle. However, sometimes they are essential for people as they may not sleep at all without them. Yet, there are alternatives for chronic insomnia (maybe a topic for another day)?
- Down time just before bed. Relax before you head off for bed. If you dim the lights and listen to your body you will recognise you are winding down and feeling sleepy. This is the time to head off for bed. If I happen to wake up during the night and have difficulty getting back to sleep then I can always reach for my ipod and have Andrea serenade me back to sleep!
